The first with a boy and his dog, his hat as the inkpot cover, the sand box in the form of an iron-bound trunk, the hand-bell to the opposing end; the other two Inkstands cylindrical and square, both topped by a hand-bell cover 6in - 10in. high
A dog has from Antiquity commonly been a symbol of faithfulness and so is the attribute of Fidelity personified, standing for the trust between master and servant: here alluding to the hand-bell for summoning a servant to hand deliver a letter.
A related inkstand with the same kneeling amorino was sold at Christie's London, June 8, 1989, lot 15.
