Saint Vincent de Paul (circa 1580-1660) was "a French priest of humble peasant origin who devoted his life to the relief of the poor" (Hall, 322). He is commonly depicted in the act of rescuing destitute children, as on the reliquary made for the church of the Madeleine, Paris, in 1848 (exhibited Un age d'or, 1991, cat. #277). He founded The Congregation of Mission Priests and The Sisters of Charity; both these missionary organisations continue today and their work is worldwide. See p. XXX, above, for Louis' support and attitude to charity and the indigent class.
