VICTORY: AN ALLEGORICAL DEMI-FIGURAL WALL APPLIQUE

To be executed in gilt bronze and crystal

An anthemion-terminated backplate with a central lion mask holding the circlet mounted with three lights of lappeted cornucopia form 12in high

Appliques with closely related demi-figures of Victory, but differing lights, were supplied by Claude Galle in 1809 for Napoleon's Cabinet Particulier at the Grand Trianon, Versailles (see Ledoux-Lebard, 1975, 149-50). Candelabra with full-length Victory figures and having lights identical to the present design, including the vase support to the central light on the head of Victory, were sold at Sotheby's New York, March 31, 1995, lot 66.
